Chinese star Liang Wenchong and South Africa’s Richard Sterne fired matching six-under-par 64s for the joint opening round lead at the US$2.5 million UBS Hong Kong Open, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Liang, a three-time winner on the Omega China Tour and the 2007 Asian Tour’s Order of Merit winner, nailed seven birdies against a lone bogey at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling.
Chinese Taipei’s Wang Ter-chang, who played twice on last year’s Omega China Tour, was joint fifth after a 66, one stroke behind Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang and Filipino Frankie Minoza, who shared third in an Asian-dominated leaderboard.
